Early January always feels like a deep breath.
The holidays are over. The calendar is clean. And a lot of us are trying to get back into a rhythm that actually feels good.
This is what I keep coming back to: Wine is at its best when it feels like company, not a test. Not something you have to “get right.” Not something you need the perfect words for. Just something that belongs at the table.
What 2025 reminded me
Most people don’t need more wine knowledge. They need less pressure. So many guests are carrying this quiet fear of sounding “wrong.” I’ve seen how fast that disappears when someone simply feels safe to say, “I like this,” and move on.
The best bottle is the one that fits the moment. Not the most famous label. Not the one with the longest description. The one that makes the food better, the conversation easier, and the night feel like a night.
Wine is always a story first. A place. A family. A harvest. A decision someone made in a vineyard you and I will probably never see. That’s the part that makes it real.
What I’m focused on in 2026
More practical wine help. More producer and place stories. More experiences that feel relaxed and human. More moments from the floor, from travel, from study. Not to teach from a pedestal, but to bring you along.
A small New Year’s challenge
Next time you drink wine, try this. Take a sip. Ask: does this feel fresh, smooth, or rich? Then ask: what food would make this even better? That’s it. That’s a real wine conversation.
Here’s to 2026. Less pressure. Better meals. Bottles that make sense. Salud.
